Are you really hungry?
We all know what it feels like to eat until we’re stuffed. It’s fine once in a while – think big Sunday lunch with the family and friends. But overeating can become a habit leading to an intake of extra kilojoules and weight gain if this carries on for a period of time. We’re more likely to stuff ourselves according to external stimuli like the time of day or how much is left in the packet, rather than what our gut is telling us. This is a habit you can “unlearn” by ignoring the external cues and listening to your body.

Use this simple scale to rate your hunger, and eat only when you’re in the 3 to 4 range. At a 1 or 2, you don’t need to eat and by 5 or 6, you’re likely to overeat or make poor food choices because you’re so ravenous.
1 I don’t feel hungry.
2 Food sounds good, but I couldn’t eat a whole apple.
3 My stomach feels empty.
4 My stomach is growling.
5 My stomach and head hurt.
6 I’m irritable and can’t focus. Eating feels like an emergency.
Only eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re satisfied.
