This Is Why Some People Are Mad That Casey Affleck Won An Oscar
By Korin Miller
What do you think?
Casey Affleck won an Oscar Sunday night for Best Actor for his role in Manchester by the Sea, and while he was obviously thrilled about it, plenty of people were not—and they took to Twitter to protest.

Tell me again how sexual assault charges can “ruin” a man’s career. ?

So, in the USA when u get accused of sexual harassment 2 things happen: either you win an Oscar or you get elected President.

Here’s why: Casey had two separate sexual harassment lawsuits brought against him in 2010 from women who worked on the set of the film I’m Still Here, which Casey directed. In one case, the film’s director of photography Magdalena Gorka claimed Casey climbed into bed with her during shooting and tried to get her to sleep with him, per court documents obtained by . She also alleged that after she refused Casey’s advances, she was “berated and verbally attacked” by the actor and “criticised constantly.” She stated in the court documents that she was forced to resign twice because of the harassment she faced.
According to court documents obtained by , producer Amanda White in her lawsuit said Casey told another crew member to show her his penis, tried to force her to stay in a hotel room with him, referred to women as “cows” in her hearing, and asked her “Isn’t it about time you get pregnant?” when he found out her age. White also alleged that in retaliation for her objections to the harassment, she was not paid the agreed-upon fees for her work. The allegations were settled out of court for an undisclosed amount, reports. Casey has denied the allegations.
While the allegations largely stayed out of the headlines during awards season, there were some who didn’t welcome the actor’s critical acclaim. Fresh Off The Boat actress Constance Wu made news speaking out about Casey in January on Twitter, where she expressed anger over his continued career success despite the sexual harassment accusations. While she said she was “counselled against,” speaking out against a fellow actor, Constance said that Casey’s nomination shows that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences condones and reinforces “the industry’s gross and often hidden mistreatment of women.”
Here’s a thing I wrote during an convo w/ about how Casey Affleck’s win will be a nod to Trump’s.

Brie Larson, who presented Casey with the award and who won her own Oscar for her portrayal of a sexual assault victim in Room, was also not celebrating:

Casey responded to the allegations in a cover story: “People say whatever they want. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how you respond… I guess people think if you’re well-known, it’s perfectly fine to say anything you want. I don’t know why that is. But it shouldn’t be, because everybody has families and lives.”
When asked about the allegations and controversy in a post-Oscars interview with the on Tuesday, Casey said both sides in the settled case are prohibited from commenting on the matter. He added, “I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else.”
